FAQ - What is NMV?

Mortar calculates NMV as your online revenue less any returns, taxes, and shipping each month.

Question

What is Net Merchandise Volume (NMV)?

Answer

NMV stands for Net Merchandise Volume. Mortar calculates NMV as your online revenue less any returns, taxes, and shipping each month.

For example, if you receive $25,000 in online revenue and $5,000 in online returns in a given month, your total NMV is $20,000 (taxes and shipping are also subtracted in the full calculation).

Mortar never considers in-store sales toward your NMV - only orders that flow through your Shopify store are included when calculating NMV.

How NMV affects your plan

Every Mortar plan considers NMV. Each plan covers a defined NMV range, and as your business grows, your plan adjusts to match your volume. As of April 2026, our current plans are:

  • Connect β€” up to $10,000 monthly NMV

  • Grow β€” up to $50,000 monthly NMV

  • Scale β€” over $50,000 monthly NMV, billed in flat monthly tiers based on your NMV range

Your plan is based on a 90-day trailing average of your NMV, so a single high-volume month won't move you to a different plan. When your trailing average consistently crosses a plan threshold, you'll be notified with a 30-day window to adjust.

To see the current tiers and find the plan that matches your NMV, go to Apps > Mortar > Settings and click Choose plan, or review the bands on our pricing page.

On a legacy plan? If you signed up on a previous version of our plans, your subscription may follow different terms than those above β€” for example, a different NMV allowance on Connect or Grow, or usage-based billing on Scale. You'll continue on your current plan unless you choose to switch. To see your plan or move to today's tiers, go to Apps > Mortar > Settings.
