Fixing "Non-unique" products

Step-by-step guide for linking "Non-unique" products using the Mortar linking export.

Updated over a week ago

Overview

Non-unique products have multiple matches on Shopify or your POS. There are two ways to link a "Non-unique" product. You can either update products to make each unique or archive redundant products.

Options for fixing "Non-unique" products

For the best results, repeat these steps for each product on the Priority and Unlinked tab found on the Products page in Mortar.

Fix by Updating

Use one of these two methods to properly link a product between your POS and Shopify store. Mortar uses any of the POS ID fields to identify a unique match to the Shopify SKU or Barcode.

Best practice: Use the unique ID automatically created by your POS as the SKU in Shopify.

Updating Non-unique Shopify products

  1. Click on the Title of a product, this will take you to the Shopify product detail page.

  2. Search for this product in your POS and copy the unique item or product ID auto-generated by your POS into the SKU field on Shopify.

  3. Press Save on the product in Shopify.

Updating Non-unique POS products

  1. Click the "Search POS" link on a row of the export.

  2. In your POS, select the version of your product that should NOT link to Shopify.

  3. Update the matching Custom SKU, SKU, UPC, or EAN from your POS product to make it unique or remove it altogether.

Fix by Archiving

Products you no longer keep in stock do not need to be kept. Archiving/disabling/deactivating a product does not destroy any history you have with it. It simply hides the product from most searches.

Archive Non-unique Shopify products

  1. Click on the Title of a product; this will take you to the Shopify product detail page

  2. Press the "Archive Product" button at the bottom of the product page

  3. Press Save on the product in Shopify

Archive Non-unique POS products

  1. Click the "Search POS" on a row of the export

  2. Choose whichever product copy you do NOT need to keep and select Archive

    1. Lightspeed R-series press Archive

    2. Heartland Retail press Disable

    3. Lightspeed X-series turn off the Active switch

    4. In Shopify, scroll to the bottom of the product page and select Archive
