Managing Dropship orders

Two scenarios for dropshipping through Shopify - using a product in POS, or not using a product in POS.

Overview

Dropshipping has become a popular way for retailers to expand their product offerings without having to hold inventory. With Shopify you can easily manage dropshipping orders and Mortar supports syncing these orders to your POS.

If you choose to track dropship orders in your POS there are different scenarios to consider. Do you want to track the financials in your POS, will the product be in your POS, will manage inventory in your POS?

Creating the product in your POS enables you to manage pricing like other products, or sell the product in your physical store as well as online.

Scenario 1: Product in the POS

If you create a matching product in your POS use the standard process for adding it to Shopify. This will link the POS product to the matching product provided by your dropshipping service.

  • Use the "add" tag to ensure there is a link to the Shopify product.

  • Price updates from your POS can be manage just like same workflow for dropshipping products.

Managing Inventory

Note: If you are not sure, check with your third-party dropship integration for guidance on managing inventory

  • If you are not syncing inventory for a dropship product in your POS, add the "noinventory" tag to avoid updating Shopify's inventory on hand with changes from your POS.

  • If you want to continue selling the product when it is out of stock , add the "instock" tag

Scenario 2: Product is not in the POS

Without a matching product in your POS you need to work with your dropshipping partner to ensure you stay organized.

  • When you do not create a matching dropship product in your POS, orders for dropship products are added to your POS using the "No product found" product.

  • If you integrate between Mortar and Shipstation, the "no product found" product is passed to Shipstation.

Any order for a Shopify product that is not linked to a product in your POS will use the "no product found" product when the order is synced to your POS. For this reason not all orders using the "no product found" product are guaranteed to be a dropship order.

To limit confusion and ensure the most accurate inventory, we recommend linking any non-dropship Shopify products with a matching product in your POS.
