Why is there a migration variance

Overview

Sometimes the total for a Shopify order in your POS will not add up as expected. The most common occurrence is tax-related rounding. Variations in how platforms calculate taxes can result in differences of usually a few pennies. Mortar will add the "Migration variance" payment if it needs to balance a discrepancy to successfully create a transaction in your POS.

Example of a tax-related migration variance

The POS calculated the tax as $0.01 more than the Shopify order.

Other causes for migration variance include discounts and shipping rates.

Note: The payment method named "Migration variance" is required. Please do not rename this payment method.

If you have difficulty finding the root cause of a "Migration variance", please contact Mortar chat support and provide the Shopify order number.
